Books completed in 2020 - Part Three

I love to read, but while I do a fair amount of reading for study and research, or to fuel my preaching and writing, I do not at present get to just sit down and reads loads of books cover to cover over the course of a year. There are other pressing responsibilities and activities that must take priority, and that is as it should be. Nonetheless, in addition to the articles, essays, and think-pieces I will digest in a year, I do discipline myself to make time to actually sit down and work through several books cover to cover. This year I finished 15 books (if anyone is wondering, I do not count listening to audio books – something I do only rarely – or skim reading). I will not review these books here, but simply list them below with title, a copied and pasted book description and author bio, and a page count. I will list these books in 3 parts, 5 at a time. This is the third and final part. You can read part one here: Books completed in 2020 - Part One | RyanBurtonKing.blogspot.com and part two here: Books completed in 2020 - Part Two | RyanBurtonKing.blogspot.com

A Narrative of the Lord's Wonderful Dealings with John Marrant, a black (Now going to preach the gospel in Nova Scotia – John Marrant (1785)

Book Description

This is a spiritual autobiography, so the book description and author biography are here combined.

“John Marrant (June 15, 1755 – April 15, 1791) one of the first African-American preachers and missionaries in North America. Born free in New York City, he moved as a child with his family to Charleston, South Carolina. His father died when he was young, and he and his mother also lived in Florida and Georgia. After escaping to the Cherokee, with whom he lived for two years, he allied with the British during the American Revolutionary War and resettled afterward in London. There he became involved with the Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion and ordained as a preacher.

Marrant was supported to travel in 1785 as a preacher and missionary to Nova Scotia, where he founded a Methodist church in Birchtown. He married there before settling in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1790 he returned to London. He wrote a memoir about his life, published in 1785 in London as A Narrative of the Lord's Wonderful Dealings with John Marrant, a black; also published were a 1789 sermon, and a journal in 1790 covering the previous five years of his life.”

Marrant was the focus of one of my Black History 2020 essays, exploring the intersection of Black, British, and Christian history, which you can read here: http://ryanburtonking.blogspot.com/2020/10/black-history-month-2020-john-marrant.html

Here Are Your Gods! : Faithful Discipleship in Idolatrous Times – Christopher J. H. Wright (2020)

Book Description

“Christopher J H Wright unpacks the Biblical theme of idolatry and connects it to discipleship in today’s world. As Christians, we desperately need to name and expose the false gods and idols that we are tempted to bow down to – ‘Here are your gods!’

The Bible challenges the idols of political power and nationalism. The Biblical story is filled with hope that the kingdom of God will ultimately triumph over all human empires. How then should we live as followers of Jesus, the Messiah, Saviour, Lord and King?

Part One is adapted from chapter 5 of Wright’s The Mission of God, ‘The Living God Confronts Idolatry’. Parts Two and Three bring the Bible to bear on contemporary politics in the UK and USA, and for all Christians seeking to make sense of the changing world we live in.”

Say It! Celebrating Expository Preaching in the African American Tradition – Eric C. Redmond, general editor (2020)

Book Description

Say It! Celebrating Expository Preaching in the African American Tradition argues that Biblical Exposition is most dynamic when coupled with the African American preaching tradition. Charlie Dates, Romell Williams, George Parks, Jr., Terry D. Streeter and a cast of pastors and preaching professors collaborate to demonstrate the power of exposition in the cradle of the Black pulpit. The contributors in this volume give examples of African American Biblical exposition in every section of the Old Testament and New Testament. They also explain how to preach from narrative, poetical, prophetic, epistolary, and apocalyptic genres throughout the Scriptures. This important and powerful resource celebrates the faithful, biblical preaching of African Americans that is so often overlooked because it's stylistically different than the style of most white preachers. Appropriate for training associate ministers or use as a textbook in homiletics, Say It! will give the preacher what is needed to speak to real life from every page of the Book!
